Who says you have to pick one passion in life? Danielle Shorr is an author and a personal trainer, and is crushing both fields. She recently published her first book of poetry, Beyond Existing, and is an NASM certified personal training working in Orange County, California.
A couple of years ago, I read a poem of hers that stuck in my heart and wouldn’t let go. “Let” is still one of the most striking and poems I’ve read—I simply had to email the author of such a beautiful work, and we’ve kept in touch ever since. She has many words of wisdom to share, and even saved a few for us.
I’ve been working under a lot of different trades in the past few years. I’m a college student, a published author, and most recently a personal trainer. My book, Beyond Existing, came out this August and it’s a collection of my poetry. This is a project I’ve been working on for a few years so it’s been really exciting to see the final form. I also run my personal training company out of my home gym in Orange County and work with mostly young women and college students. I get to do the two things I love for work: fitness and writing—I couldn’t ask for anything more! What has been your biggest obstacle so far?
My biggest obstacle so far has been balancing all of the different parts of my life and trying to be successful in all of them simultaneously. I’ve had some moments of weakness but ultimately they’ve made me stronger in my pursuit of my goals.
What’s the most exciting part of being a business owner/girlboss/badass human?
Getting to work on my own time and be creative in my work is definitely the best part about what I do. With writing, there is a variety of outlets that I can submit to and I’ve written for outlets like Mtv and xojane. There’s such a variety in forms as well, and I also love that. For personal training I get to work individually with each client and help them reach goals. I put emphasis on strength-based goals over aesthetics and it becomes a great motivator for the people I work with.
What do you see in the future for your career?
When it comes to my future, I’m not sure which path I’ll pursue deeper. I’d love to keep both as options and ultimately gain more knowledge in fitness and nutrition. There’s also the possibility of graduate school for writing, which I wouldn’t be opposed to. The future will be interesting, but I’m ready for it.
What is the best piece of advice for women who are thinking of going down the same path?
My advice to women is don’t be afraid to try something new and step out of your comfort zone. That’s how I discovered both of my passions. I’d also say to never let a man tell you what you’re capable of—you define your own success. Love yourself, take care of yourself, and trust your awesomeness.
